PRONG & PREEN 01

https://chromefetus.thecomicseries.com/comics/395

Here are a couple of new characters I’ve been meaning to draw for quite some time. Consider this an introduction, or at the very least, a trial run.

As much as I’ll probably never be entirely finished with Cochlea & Eustachia (I’ve been drawing them for literally a quarter of a century), it feels good to wander off and spend some time with a different cast once in a while. I even have several plotlines planned for them, which puts this project dangerously close to being “organized.”

I’ve also been wanting to try my hand at completely wordless comics - an interesting challenge, especially when it comes to communicating plot points in an already inscrutable surrealist comic strip.

More to come!

COCHLEA & EUSTACHIA (The Stranger Strips)

My recollection is pretty hazy on these comic strips I drew for THE STRANGER. I think it was probably 2003?
I have to acknowledge and thank Rick Altergott who put in a good word for me helped get me the gig. It was probably my first professional job that paid me actual money for my weird comics. (He also provided me lots of useful advice and even instructed me how to digitally color the comics - something I was completely ignorant about at the time.)
Although I didn’t live in any city that got that particular weekly periodical, I remember hearing about it when I attended the MoCCA Arts Fest that year. People were abuzz about it and kept coming up to me to tell me how excited they were to see such an oddball comic in the paper!
I think that may have been the key to Fantagraphics contacting me to publish THE SQUIRREL MACHINE.
Very fond memories.
